Really, this book is a 3-star read, but I gave it an extra star for Si being so much like my dad. (My husband can vouch for me on this.)
Honestly, I don't think the world is ready for 2 Tommy Hall's, but apparently it's too late. Si Robertson is already here. He's 6 months younger than my dad, who was born in 1947. (Yeah, my dad is an old man. Today is actually his birthday!) They both seem to have the same sense of dad humor, with stupid jokes and corny one-liners. They both come from dirt-poor families and lived in the country their whole lives. Only difference here is my dad couldn't be in the army because of injuries he got having whooping cough.
That's my daddy. And you guys think I'm joking about the country redneck thing! HA!
I have never watched Duck Dynasty, so I learned a lot of things I never would have guessed. Si is the youngest of the Robertson boys; Phil is actually older, despite the fact Si looks older, if you ask me. He's been to Vietnam and lived in Germany. He has tried college several times but never liked it enough to finish, despite being exceptionally bright. And he makes the reeds for the Duck Commander duck calls.
For those wondering, Si without that scraggly beard. LOL
I guess this book just makes me nostalgic for my lost youth. I miss duck calls and deer hunting and wearing camo to school. Walking the gravel roads and getting lost in the woods for hours. Supervision? What supervision? My daddy always said I could do as I pleased, as long as the cops never brought me home.
Yeah, Si, that type of parenting frightens me, too. I like to think I have higher standards.
If you're looking for a short, amusing read, I recommend this. It won't change your life or anything, but it is nice to look into the inner workings of a real, God-fearing family. It isn't bogged down by the Duck Commander thing at all. They aren't even mentioned until almost the end, so it's not like this is a walking ad for the show or something. It's just a refreshing (dare I say Christian) read about family, appreciating what God gives you, and living life.
And guns, hunting, skinning animals, a lot of fishing and bad dad jokes. Can't forget the dad jokes.
